EPILOGUE

Two months later

ALEXA

I turn my key in the lock and push open the front door of the 18th-floor condo like it’s nothing. I can’t believe how natural it feels to come home to this amazing place. I leave my keys in the dish on the table in the hallway and drop my bag.

“Anyone home?” I call as I wander through into the kitchen/living room. Sunlight is streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, making the wooden floor gleam. Across the Fort Pitt Boulevard, I can see the Monongahela River glimmering, dotted here and there with boats. Heck, sometimes I can’t even believe places like this exist, never mind that I come home to one every day.

No one answers my call, but I get the feeling Tristan is around here somewhere. I head for the rooftop patio.

To be honest, when Rhys first came barging through the door of the safe house with the news of Lorenzo’s conviction, I was a mess. I was thrilled. Like, over the moon, that Lorenzo was behind bars and would never hurt anyone again—let alone me or someone I loved.

Then, after the first rush of joy, I didn’t know what to think. Was that it? I’d had those two amazing months with Rhys and Tristan and was that all going to end now that Lorenzo was out of our lives? If we weren’t in witness protection anymore, was our relationship still even viable? I didn’t want to sound desperate, but when Rhys asked ʻWhat now?’ I was terrified that they would want to go their own separate ways. After all, they’re successful, well-respected men, and what am I? Some homeless girl clinging to their shirtsleeves, desperate to share their world. Maybe once they were back in the real world, they would realize that I just didn’t fit there with them.

Instead, Tristan asked me to move in with him.

“I mean, unless you’re really fond of that attic you used to live in,” he said with a smile.

I couldn’t believe it. I felt like my knees were going to give out under me.

“Are you sure?” I could barely get the words out. They came out in a squeak.

He laughed. “Of course, I am, sweetheart,” he said, hugging me. “Besides, it’s way more practical. I’m sure as hell not moving in to your attic, and Rhys’ place is a dive.”

“Hey!” Rhys interjected. “It’s not a dive. It just…has character.”

“It’s a dive,” Tristan told me, with a smile. “Anyway. If you’re at my place, then Rhys can just come over and we won’t need to drive all around town picking everyone up. Besides, I’m the only one with a hot tub on their rooftop patio.”

“Show off,” Rhys muttered, but he was smiling.

“You have a what?” I asked, my eyes the size of dinner plates.

Rhys laughed and slung an arm around my shoulder. “Oh yeah, Alexa. Get ready. You think this place is nice? Tristan’s is on a whole other level.”

“Plus,” Tristan said, his voice a little wistful, “It’ll be nice to have a reason to come home.
